Two great sentences from Denis Johnson stories

Sentence the first:

“The downpour raked the asphalt and gurgled in the ruts.”

This sentence about a downpour on the highway actually SOUNDS like a downpour on the highway. Amazing.

“The torn moon mended.”

This is from the end of a story about (I guess) finding comfort in some transient joys (read: doin it), and it manages to convey so much peace in just four words that I want to steal it and use it as a title for a musical project I have been trying my hand (and failing) at for awhile, which is: make the record you want to fall asleep listening to.
